  • Extra-marital affairs

  • Multiple or anonymous sexual partners and/or one-night stands

  • Compulsive masturbation

  • Engaging in recurrent high-risk sexual behavior such as unprotected sex or sex in combination with drug use

  • Excessive phone or computer-based sex

  • Engaging in or soliciting prostitution

Regaining control requires surrender first.

When the use of porn becomes addictive, meaning that there is an obsessive and compulsive element to it, this can lead to issues with sexual arousal or sexual dysfunction, or otherwise impede healthy sexuality and meaningful relationships. Porn addiction can also evolve to include “taboo” or even illegal engagement with pornographic materials that can jeopardize ones safety or legal status, and therefore requires timely and skilled treatment.

Some affects of porn addiction may include:

  • Isolation or withdrawal from friends, family, or a primary partner

  • Irritability

  • Sexual desensitization or issues with physical or emotional arousal

  • Loss or relationships

  • Unrealistic expectations about sex or from one’s partner

  • Loss of confidence or self-worth

  • Feelings of shame

  • Employment issues (using porn at work or skipping work due to use)

  • Depression

trauma therapy

Trauma is not what happened to us, but the impact those events continue to have on us today.

trauma therapy

To get to where we want to go, we have to understand where we came from.

Trauma can be acute or complex and can present in a myriad of ways. It is our belief that trauma lies at the heart of most sex and porn addiction. Sex and porn addiction also cause additional trauma for the individual and their loved ones. Through a trauma-informed lens, we can gain understanding of how our past shaped us into who and how we are today, and although we can’t change the past, we still have the chance to change our future and experience post-traumatic growth.

Trauma can result from:

  • Growing up or living in an unstable or unsafe environment

  • Untimely separation from a parent, partner, or loved one

  • Serious illness or health issues

  • Experiencing sexual, physical, or verbal abuse

  • Domestic violence

  • Experiencing neglect

  • Not having your emotional needs met

  • Struggling with intellectual or developmental delays

  • Bullying

  • Relationship betrayal

emdr therapy

An evidenced-based modality that can complement trauma-informed talk therapy

emdr therapy

Reprocess your memories and reframe your core beliefs

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a is a psychotherapeutic intervention that enables people to heal from symptoms of distress that have resulted from various life experiences. The process of EMDR is completed in 8 phases over at least eight sessions. In these sessions, the therapist will work with the individual to identify core memories that are tied to distress or represent the origin or negative core beliefs. After these memories are identified, the therapist will utilize visual or tactile bilateral stimulation combined with verbal cues to desensitize and reprocess these memories on a brain level.

Advantages of EMDR:

  • EMDR is a highly effective, evidence-based modality that has been cited in dozens of clinical studies.

  • EMDR can assist individuals who have struggled with traditional talk therapy or want to see more immediate results.

  • EMDR is solutions focused and typically leads to post-traumatic growth.
